In a letter to her husband, John Adams, who was then writing the Constitution, Abigail Adams implored her husband to “Remember the Ladies.” The letter was dated March 31, 1776. Here is an excerpt from that famous missive:
"And, by the way, in the new code of laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make, I desire you would remember the ladies and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the husbands. Remember, all men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.”
Abigail would likely be proud of the passion, creativity and old-fashioned work ethic of the faithful members of the Alabama Federation of Republican Women. AFRW is certainly proud of the unceasing and inspiring efforts of our women to promote conservative principles and elect conservative candidates. For your character, zeal and tireless efforts on behalf of our Republican Party, we salute you. On this page, we will feature articles about especially interesting or inspiring Republican women clubs and individuals around the state.
May we all Remember the Ladies. Politics might make it possible, but women make it happen. Never underestimate a determined woman. And, as these articles will attest, never fail to fear an organized group of them!
Put on your lipstick, ladies. We have work to do!
